Almost everybody buys a shed in April, which is exactly why April is the worst month to buy one. Here is how the year actually runs.
Spring is the crowd
The first warm Saturday, everybody in Scott County looks at their yard at the same time. Order volume goes up, the build queue fills, and delivery schedules stretch. Our normal windows are 1 to 12 business days for a stock building and 3 to 6 weeks for a custom build, and spring is when those numbers sit at the long end of the range.
Spring is also the wettest time to be doing site work, which is the other half of the problem.
Late fall and winter is the smart window
Order volume drops after the holidays. The build queue is shorter, delivery schedules are more open, and you have a much better chance of getting the date you want. If you want a custom building with insulation and a finish-out package, this is when to order it, because that work happens after the shell and it is the first thing that stretches when the shop is busy.
The other advantage is that you are ready in March instead of waiting until June. A building delivered in February is a building you have for the entire season.
The catch: pad prep in cold weather
The honest downside. Building a gravel pad in frozen or saturated ground is harder, and compaction is worse on frozen material. If you are doing the pad yourself, watch for a dry stretch above freezing and do it then, or have the rock in place before hard freeze and finish grading later.
Ground conditions also matter for the truck. We need firm ground for a loaded trailer, roughly two feet of clearance past the building width along the path, and about 13 feet of overhead. A soggy January yard can push a delivery the same way a soggy April yard can. Details on the prep page.
Summer is fine, fall is good
Midsummer settles down after the spring rush and the ground is usually firm, which makes it a solid time to buy. Fall is arguably the best all-around window: dry ground, moderate queue, and you get the building before winter storage season when you actually need it.
What does not change with the season
Pricing and terms. Buildings start at $1,900 for a C+ Utility 6×8 and $2,762 for a Cardinal Utility 8×8 regardless of the month. Rent-to-own has no credit check, runs 24 to 60 months, starts at $75.44 a month, takes your first two months as the deposit and carries no early payoff fee. Cash custom orders take 20% down, and financing with no money down is available with approved credit.
Neither does the coverage: our 10 year guarantee against acts of nature such as storm damage and settling and our craftsmanship, plus a 50 year LP SmartSide siding warranty and a lifetime AdvanTech floor warranty, with claims handled by us.
The practical advice
Whenever you order, start the pad the same week. Getting rock delivered and spread in this area frequently takes longer than getting the building, and an unfinished pad is the most common reason a delivery gets pushed. Design the building in the 3D Shed Builder, place the order, then get the rock ordered that day.
