Robertson County has a lot of five to forty acre places where somebody is running a garden, a few head of livestock, chickens and a shop out of buildings that were never designed for any of it. A portable building is the fastest way to get purpose-built space on a homestead without taking on a construction project.
Separate feed from everything else
The single best decision on a small farm is giving feed its own dry, rodent-resistant space. Feed stored in a general purpose shed brings mice, and mice bring everything else. A small building, 8×10 or 10×12, with a tight floor, a good door sweep and metal bins solves it permanently. AdvanTech flooring, which carries a lifetime warranty, matters here because a soft floor that opens up at the seams is an open door.
Equipment wants length and a wide door
A compact tractor with a loader is 11 to 13 feet long with the bucket down. Add a brush hog, a tiller and a trailer and you are at 12×24 minimum, 14×32 if you want to walk around anything. Order a 9 or 10 foot door. A 6 foot door on an equipment building is a mistake you cannot undo. We build up to 16×60.
The shop is the building you will use most
On a homestead, everything breaks. A 12×20 with a bench, real light, spray foam insulation and electrical is the difference between fixing things and hauling them to town. Our finish-out packages cover electrical, flooring and wall coverings, which is far cheaper built in than retrofitted. We do not do plumbing in house but will point you to someone who does if you want a utility sink.
Coops and small livestock
A converted small building makes a solid coop if you plan for it: ventilation up high without drafts at bird level, a floor you can clean, a door you can secure against raccoons, and a run attached on the shaded side. Ventilation is the piece people underestimate. Ammonia and moisture cause more problems in a coop than cold ever does.
Placement on a farm
Put buildings where the work is, on high ground, with the doors facing the direction you approach from. Build a level gravel pad about a foot larger than the building on all sides, standing a few inches above grade so runoff moves away. Around gates and doors, extra rock now saves a mud pit in February.
Delivery to a farm
Check the turn off the road, the lane width, the culvert and the overhead limbs. We need roughly two feet of clearance past the building width along the whole route and about 13 feet of overhead, on ground firm enough for a loaded trailer. Deliveries run Monday through Friday. See the prep guide.
