Once you get south and west of Millstadt the lots turn into acreage, and a lot of that acreage has horses on it. A portable horse barn or run-in shelter gets a shelter up in weeks instead of the months a built barn takes, and it costs a fraction of what a pole barn with stalls costs.
Stall math
A 10×10 stall works for a small horse or a pony. A 12×12 is the standard and the right call for most full-size horses. A 12×14 is generous and worth it for a mare and foal or a horse that stalls a lot. Ceiling height should give you enough room that a horse throwing its head has clearance, so do not skimp on wall height to save money.
A 12×24 building gives you two 12×12 stalls. A 12×32 gives you two stalls plus an 8 foot tack area. A 14×36 gives you two roomy stalls and a real tack and feed room. We build up to 16×60, so a three-stall setup with tack and feed is on the table too.
Tack and feed rooms
Separate the two if you can. Feed needs to be rodent-resistant and dry, ideally with a solid door and metal bins. Tack needs to be dry and reasonably ventilated so leather does not mold in a Metro East summer. Both benefit from a real floor rather than dirt, and our AdvanTech flooring carries a lifetime warranty. Spray foam insulation in the tack room takes the temperature swing out of it, and a finish-out package with electrical means you get lights and an outlet without running a project afterward.
Run-in shelters
For pasture horses, a three-sided run-in is often the right answer instead of stalls. Face the open side away from the prevailing northwest wind. Size it at roughly 12×12 of covered space per horse and go bigger than you think, because a dominant horse will keep the others out of a tight shelter. Set it on a well drained, slightly elevated pad so the entry does not turn into a mud pit by February.
Ventilation and footing
Barns need to breathe. Ridge vents, gable vents and Dutch doors move air and cut ammonia buildup, which is the thing that damages a horse’s lungs long before anything else in the barn does. Under the building, a level gravel pad extending about a foot past the walls keeps water out. Grade the approach so runoff moves away from the doors.
