Du Quoin and the country around it is horse territory, and horse people have a specific problem: you need shelter, tack storage and hay space now, not next spring when a contractor finally has an opening. That is the gap a portable horse barn fills.
Run-in shelter versus a full barn
Start with what the animals actually need. A three-sided run-in gives horses relief from sun, wind and driving rain and is often all that is required on decent pasture. A full portable horse barn with stalls makes sense when you are foaling, treating an injury, feeding separately, or you simply want to be able to close a door in January. Many of our customers start with shelter and add a second building for tack and feed later, which spreads the cost out and is usually the smarter play.
Do not skip the tack and feed problem
The most common regret we hear from small-acreage owners is not stall size. It is that they had nowhere dry and rodent-resistant to keep tack, grain, supplements and hay. Hay wants airflow and a floor that is off the ground. Grain wants to be sealed away from mice. Tack wants to be dry and lockable. A separate utility or lofted barn dedicated to that job protects a lot of money in leather and feed, and it keeps the actual barn from turning into a storage unit.
Layout details worth deciding up front
Think about which way the weather comes from and orient the open side away from it. Think about how you will get a wheelbarrow or a truck to the door. Think about water: where the hose runs in summer and what happens when it freezes. Add extra windows if you want light and airflow, and consider a wider door if you ever want to drive equipment in. All of that is easier to spec before we build than after. Browse our building styles including the horse barn, then use the custom options page for doors, windows and colors.
Site prep on pasture
Level matters more on acreage than people expect, because the ground looks flat until you put a straightedge on it. A compacted gravel pad slightly larger than the building footprint keeps mud out of the doorway and keeps the frame square. Make sure the approach is firm enough for a delivery truck, especially after a wet week, and clear low limbs along the route. Our preparing for delivery page walks through it.
Paying for it
Rent-to-own is available with no credit check and no effect on your credit score, which is how a lot of livestock buildings get bought around here. Traditional financing with soft-pull pre-approval is also available. Compare on our rent-to-own and financing options page.
