A shed is the only thing you will add to your property that is big enough to change how the house looks from the street and cheap enough that people skip the design conversation entirely. In Highland, where a lot of the newer neighborhoods have consistent rooflines and consistent color palettes, that shows.
Match the roof first
People obsess over siding color and ignore the roof, but the roof is the biggest single visual mass on a shed. If your house has architectural shingles in weathered wood, a matching shingle roof on the shed makes it read as part of the property. A bright galvalume metal roof next to a shingled house reads as a farm building parked in a yard. Metal is the better long-term product in a lot of ways, so if you want metal, pick a color that lives in the same family as your shingles rather than a contrast.
Then match the trim, not the body
Here is the trick most people miss. You do not have to match the siding color exactly. What sells the match is the trim. Paint the shed trim, door and corner boards the same color as your house trim, and the body color can be a shade or two off without anyone noticing. It also ages better, because trim paint is what you will repaint in ten years anyway.
We offer metal, paint, standard vinyl, premium vinyl and urethane finishes, so there is a lot of range. Browse the custom options to see what pairs with your house.
Scale it to the yard
A 12×24 on a quarter acre looks like a barn dropped behind a house. A 10×16 on the same lot looks like it belongs. If you need the storage, get the storage, but consider running it long and narrow along a fence line rather than wide and square in the middle of the yard. The visual footprint from the patio is what matters, not the square footage.
Details that make it look built, not bought
Shutters, flower boxes, transom windows above the door, a small overhang and a proper set of double doors instead of a single roll-up will do more for how a building looks than any amount of color matching. Our Victorian Shed, Garden Shed and Side Porch Cabin styles are designed with that in mind. Try combinations in the 3D Shed Builder before you commit.
Check the covenants
Newer Highland subdivisions frequently restrict accessory building size, siding material, roof color or placement, and some require architectural review. Read the covenants before you order, and confirm the city’s setback requirements for accessory structures. It is a short phone call.
