Portable Buildings in Alton, IL: Sheds for Old Houses, Narrow Lots and Hillsides

Alton is a hard town to buy a shed for, and anybody who has tried already knows why. The housing stock is old, the lots are narrow and deep, half the yards are on a grade, and the access to the back of the property is frequently a gate, an alley, or nothing at all. None of that means you cannot have a good building. It means you have to plan the delivery before you pick the size.

Measure the gate, not the yard

The most common mistake in Alton is falling in love with a 12×20 and then discovering the only way into the backyard is a 9 foot gap between the house and the neighbor’s fence. We need roughly two feet of clearance past the width of the building along the entire delivery path, plus about 13 feet of overhead room for the truck and building. So a 10 wide building wants about a 12 foot corridor.

Walk the path with a tape measure. Note the narrowest pinch point, the low limbs, the gutter corners, the meter and the AC condenser. If the tightest point is under 12 feet, look at 8 wide buildings and gain the space back in length. An 8×16 stores more than a 10×12 and slides through gaps a 10 wide never will. Our delivery prep page walks through the whole checklist.

Hillside yards

A lot of Alton yards fall away toward the back. A portable building has to sit level, and the way you get level on a slope is with the pad, not with the building. Cut into the high side, build the pad up on the low side, and use gravel to bring everything into plane. Set the pad about a foot larger than the building on all sides so runoff has somewhere to go, and put a swale or a gravel trench above it if water runs down the hill toward the spot. Standing water against the skids is what shortens a building’s life more than anything else.

Matching an old house

Nothing looks worse behind a 1910 foursquare than a bright vinyl box. You have real choices here: metal, paint, standard vinyl, premium vinyl and urethane finishes, plus shingle roofs that read like a house roof instead of a barn roof. Add shutters, flower boxes, transom windows and a Victorian or garden shed profile and the building reads as an outbuilding that belongs to the house. Permits in Alton

Alton does have accessory structure rules and setbacks, and historic districts add another layer. Before you buy, call the city and ask whether a portable building on skids needs a permit at your address and what the rear and side setbacks are. Five minutes of asking beats moving a finished building.
