Jackson sits in a good spot: close enough to Cape Girardeau to have suburban lots, close enough to the country to have people with acreage. That means we deliver two very different kinds of building here, and the right choice depends entirely on which side of that line you are on.
If you are in town
Smaller lots reward going up rather than out. A lofted barn or lofted garden shed gives you a working floor plus a loft in the same footprint, which is why it is the most common style we set in residential Jackson. Match the shingle and siding to your house so it looks deliberate, and think hard about door placement, because on a tight lot the direction the door faces determines whether you can actually use the building.
If you are on acreage
Out of town the calculus changes. Width and door size matter more than looks, and a garage or lofted garage usually earns its keep faster than a shed. A lot of property owners here also end up wanting a second, smaller building specifically for tools, chemicals and feed, kept separate from the equipment. That split keeps both buildings usable.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Buying for today. The building you need is the one that still works after you buy the next mower, inherit somebody furniture, or take up a hobby that involves equipment. The incremental cost of a size up is small compared to the cost of buying twice, and the loft options give you room to grow cheaply. Look at the full range of building styles before you settle.
Pad and access
A level compacted gravel pad slightly larger than the footprint is the right answer for most sites. Concrete for shops and anything heavy. For delivery we need roughly two feet more than the building width, about thirteen feet of overhead clearance, and more turning room for longer buildings. Clear low limbs, and if we have to cross a neighbor get written permission ahead of time. Full details on our preparing for delivery page.
