Jersey County properties tend to have a house, a couple outbuildings that were old when you bought the place, and more equipment than the outbuildings can hold. The question is usually not whether you need another building. It is whether you build one more small one or one big one and be done.
One big building beats three small ones
Per square foot, a larger building is almost always cheaper than the same square footage split up, and it is far more useful. Three 8×12 sheds give you 288 square feet across three roofs, three doors and three pads, and none of them will hold a tractor. One 14×24 gives you 336 square feet under one roof with a door wide enough to matter. We build up to 16×60, so there is no reason to fragment your storage unless the buildings have to be in different places.
Sizing for what is actually in the yard
A compact utility tractor with a loader is about 11 to 13 feet long with the bucket down and wants 8 feet of overhead. A UTV is roughly 10 by 5. A 16 foot trailer is 16 feet plus a tongue. Add the mower, the fuel cans, the sprayer and a bench and you are at a 14×32 quickly. If you are storing round bales or a truck, think 16 wide.
Door width is the number that ruins people. A 6 foot door is a storage shed door. A 9 or 10 foot roll-up door is what a tractor or a truck actually needs. Spend the money there.
The pad on farm ground
Farm ground is often high clay, which means it heaves and holds water. Build a level gravel pad that stands a few inches above the surrounding grade and extends about a foot past the building on every side. Give it a crown or a slight fall so nothing pools. If the building will hold a tractor or a vehicle, concrete is the ultimate base and worth considering, though a well built gravel pad will carry it fine.
Built to be left alone
A farm building does not get maintained. It gets used. Ours are built for that: LP SmartSide siding with a 50 year warranty, AdvanTech flooring with a lifetime warranty, and our own 10 year guarantee covering acts of nature such as storm damage and settling along with our craftsmanship. If a claim comes up on the siding or floor, we handle it. You do not chase the manufacturer.
Delivery to a farm
Check the lane, the turn off the road, the culvert and the overhead limbs before delivery day. We need about two feet of clearance past the building width the whole way and roughly 13 feet overhead, on ground firm enough for a loaded trailer. Deliveries run Monday through Friday; we do not run Saturdays. See the prep guide.
Paying for it
Cash custom orders take 20% down. Financing with no money down is available with approved credit. Rent-to-own has no credit check, runs 24 to 60 months, starts at $75.44 a month on a 6×8, takes your first two months as a deposit and has no early payoff fee.
