Shed Insulation Options Explained: Auburn, KY

Insulation is the most commonly oversold and most commonly skipped option on a portable building, often to the same customer. Here is when it matters, when it does not, and what the choices actually do.

When you do not need it

If the building is storing a mower, ladders, yard tools, fuel and totes, and nobody is going to spend time in there, insulation buys you very little. Put the money into size, a better door or a ramp instead. Ventilation matters more than insulation for pure storage, because moving air is what keeps moisture from accumulating.

When it is essential

Three cases. Anywhere people will spend time: an office, a studio, a hobby room, a cabin, a pool house. Anywhere temperature-sensitive things live: electronics, batteries, medications, adhesives, finishes, a classic car. And anywhere you plan to heat or cool, because without insulation you are heating Logan County.

The condensation problem, which is separate

This is the part people miss. In a Kentucky summer, warm humid air inside a building meets a cold metal roof deck overnight and water condenses on the underside and drips on whatever is below. That happens in an uninsulated building whether you heat it or not.

Spray foam applied to the underside of the roof deck eliminates it, because the warm humid air never touches a cold surface. This is the single best argument for insulating a building you do not otherwise plan to condition, and it is why we recommend it for anyone storing tools, equipment or anything metal.

Spray foam

What we offer, and what we recommend for most people who need insulation. It seals as it insulates, so it stops air leakage as well as heat transfer, and it adheres to the roof deck, which is what solves the condensation problem. It also adds a small amount of structural rigidity. It costs more than batt and it is not a do-it-yourself product on a finished building.

Batt insulation

Cheaper per square foot and something people commonly add themselves after the fact. It works for walls, but it does not seal air movement, and it does not solve condensation on a roof deck. Worse, batt installed in a poorly ventilated building can trap moisture against the framing, which is the opposite of helpful. If you go this route, get the ventilation right first.

Ventilation is not optional either way

Gable or ridge vents. In an uninsulated building they let moisture leave. In an insulated, occupied building they keep the air from going stale. Almost no building is improved by being sealed tight with no path for air.

Do it during the build

Insulating a finished building means opening walls, working around shelving, and doing careful work in a small hot space. Ordering it with the building costs less and comes out better. The same is true of the electrical, flooring and wall coverings in our finish-out packages, and it is much easier to insulate and finish in the same pass.

The short version

Pure storage: skip insulation, buy ventilation. Storing tools, metal or equipment: spray foam the roof deck. People spending time inside: spray foam and finish out, no question. And whatever you choose, get it done at the shop.
