Sparta draws people with equipment. Between the shooting complex, the lake traffic and a county full of side-by-sides and campers, there is a lot of gear around here that spends most of the year sitting outside getting sun-baked and rained on. An enclosed building pays for itself faster on toys than on almost anything else, because UV and standing water destroy tires, upholstery, decals and canvas on a schedule you can set a watch by.
Measure the thing, then add four feet
People measure the trailer and buy a building that exact length. Then they cannot walk around it, cannot get the tongue in, and cannot close the door. Measure the overall length including the tongue and any rear rack, then add four feet minimum. Do the same on width: measure at the widest point, mirrors included, and add three feet so you can open a door.
Rough guides. A 14 foot utility trailer wants a 12×20 minimum. A side-by-side wants 10×16 with a wide door. A bass boat on a trailer is commonly 18 to 22 feet overall and wants a 12×28 or larger. A small travel trailer needs 14 wide and often more height than a standard building offers, so tell us the height up front.
Door width and height
This is the number that kills these projects. A 6 foot door will not take a boat trailer. Order a 9 or 10 foot roll-up minimum for anything towed, and confirm the door height against the tallest point of your load, which is usually a wakeboard tower, a roof rack, a canopy or a raised antenna. Measure it. Do not estimate it.
The pad has to handle rolling load
Pulling a loaded trailer in and out concentrates weight on a narrow track. A level gravel pad built a foot larger than the building on all sides is fine for most trailers and toys and is what we recommend for the majority of customers. Concrete is the ultimate base and the most expensive, and it earns its keep if you are backing a heavy boat or camper in weekly, because gravel rutted by a trailer tire becomes a chore.
Ventilation keeps gear alive
A sealed building full of a wet boat cover and a hot vinyl seat will grow mildew. Gable or ridge vents cost very little and prevent it. If you want to work on equipment in there year round, spray foam insulation plus a finish-out package with electrical, flooring and wall coverings turns it into a shop.
