“What size do I need” is the most common question we get and the hardest one to answer over the phone, because only you know what is going in it. But there is a method that works, and it takes about twenty minutes.
Step 1: Make the list, out loud
Walk the garage, the carport, the deck and the side of the house and write down every single thing that is going into the building. Not categories. Items. Riding mower. Push mower. Two trimmers. Wheelbarrow. Eight-foot ladder. Extension ladder. Four bikes. Deer stand. Cooler. Tote of Christmas. Tote of camping. Bag of fertilizer. All of it.
Step 2: Measure only the big things
You do not need to measure a rake. Measure the five biggest items. Typical numbers: a riding mower is about 6 feet long by 4 feet wide, a zero-turn can be 5 feet wide with the deck, an extension ladder is 8 to 10 feet closed, a wheelbarrow is roughly 5 by 2, a UTV is about 10 by 5. Add up the floor those five things need and give each of them a walking side.
Step 3: Add 30 percent
This is the step everybody skips and everybody regrets. Whatever number you just landed on, add roughly a third. You will acquire things. You will store things for someone. You will start a project. A shed that is exactly full on delivery day is a shed you will be climbing over in eighteen months.
Step 4: Go up, not just out
If the footprint you need is bigger than the yard can comfortably take, a lofted style gets you a large amount of extra storage overhead without adding a square foot to the footprint. Put the light, bulky, seasonal things up there and keep the floor for what you use weekly.

8×12 for a push mower household with tools and seasonal storage. 10×16 for a riding mower plus a bench plus seasonal storage, which is the most common answer in Madison County. 12×20 when there is a UTV, a four-wheeler or real shop work involved. 14×32 and up when it is equipment, a trailer or a vehicle. Then check the spot
