Where to Spend and Where to Save on a Shed: Granite City, IL

Nobody has an unlimited budget for a shed. The useful question is not how to spend less, it is where the money actually does something. Here is how I would rank it.

Spend: size

The most common regret by a wide margin is buying too small. Going one size up costs less than buying a second building later, and per square foot the bigger building is always the better deal. Inventory what is going in, measure the five biggest items, and add about a third for what you will accumulate. Our range runs 6×8 to 16×60, starting at $1,900 for a C+ Utility 6×8 and $2,762 for a Cardinal Utility 8×8.

Spend: the pad

This is the one place where saving money reliably costs you the building. A level gravel pad about a foot larger than the building on all sides, standing a few inches above grade so water sheets away, is what determines whether you get twenty five years or eight. Setting a building on dirt or on a few blocks is the single most expensive shortcut in this whole process.

Spend: the door

Door width and placement are permanent. A 6 foot door on a building that needs to swallow a zero-turn, a UTV or a trailer is a mistake you cannot fix later without real money. Buy the wider door and buy it on the wall you will actually approach from.

Spend: materials, because they are the building

Siding and floor are what fail first on cheap buildings, and they are not upgradable later. LP SmartSide with a 50 year warranty and AdvanTech flooring with a lifetime warranty are not decoration; they are the reason the building is still square in fifteen years. Ask who handles a warranty claim too, because that answer varies wildly. We handle ours for you.

Spend, if people will use it: insulation and electrical

Spray foam and a finish-out package with electrical, flooring and wall coverings cost far less built in than retrofitted, and they are what make a building a workspace instead of a warehouse. If nobody will spend time inside, skip both and buy ventilation instead.

Save: paint and cosmetics

Color, shutters and flower boxes are lovely and they are also the easiest things to add or change yourself later. If the building is out of sight behind the house, they are worth very little. If it is in the sight line from the patio, they matter more; you decide.

Save: interior shelving

Shelving is genuinely easy and cheap to build yourself with a Saturday and some lumber, and doing it yourself means it ends up at the heights you actually want. The exception is a loft, which is structural and should be ordered with the building.

Save: the ramp, sometimes

A ramp is worth ordering if you will be running a rider or a wheelbarrow up it daily, because ordering it gets you a better angle than most people build. If it is occasional use, you can build one later.

Save: buying in the busy season

Order in late fall or winter rather than April. The build queue is shorter and delivery schedules are more open. Our normal windows are 1 to 12 business days for a stock building and 3 to 6 weeks for a custom build, and spring sits at the long end.

And on paying for it

Rent-to-own has no credit check, runs 24 to 60 months, starts at $75.44 a month, takes your first two months as the deposit and has no early payoff fee. If your credit is decent, financing may be cheaper: our partners offer 12 months at 0% APR and no money down with approved credit, and pre-qualification is a soft pull. Cash custom orders take 20% down. Compare both on our financing page and price your exact build in the 3D Shed Builder.
